...time for change?
SAINTS OR SINNERS?
This page is for anyone who has been affected in any way, directly or indirectly by any form of abuse on St Helena Island. And for those who support us.
Abuse happens everywhere, and St Helena is no exception. What makes ST Helena stand out however is the insidious nature, acceptance, secrecy and denial on a huge scale. Like many other isolated parts of the world, sadly abuse has seemingly become accepted as a "normal" part of life rather than being exposed as the criminal act that it is. Isolation has kept the Island in this mindset to this day, and whilst nobody can blame it for developing in this way - it is now time for change.
Change is long overdue on St Helena, a seemingly perfect paradise to the outside world, who are blindly unaware of its "dark side". Again St Helena is not unique - everywhere has a "dark side" of sorts, but the stark difference here is that "nobody is to speak of it". If you are aware, and dare speak out you risk the almost certain alienation, condemning, and yet more abuse from relatives, no matter how close.
This page has been set up to expose the sad truths about attitudes towards child abuse, treatment of women, and the "victim blaming" culture which completely alienates those affected. And to expose the harsh reality to those still yet to see it, blinded by decades of secrecy (indeed a form of brainwashing), lies, and cover-ups.
The world is now fully aware of the problems on Pitcairn Island, and appalled. Yet this British Island has similar issues that are seemingly never to be exposed for fear of "ruining the islands reputation".
Worse than the lack of attention by the Islands Government, are the constant cover-ups by the UK Government whenever anything has been brought to light. We will never forgive the UK Government for putting us through this, perpetuating the situation letting it continue unknowingly, as it has been for decades. And choosing to cover up, minimise, play down and ignore the issues that have been raised. And allowing those in positions of power on the Island to lose their jobs if they do speak out.
To me, this is the most appalling and sickening aspect of the entire situation, and it is time for change. Only then can we "forgive".
The RMS has been the most loyal Saint there ever was for St Helena, and her recent loss is devastating. But....by retiring, she is continuing to serve us. By opening up the Island to the whole world. Until now, very few tourists (and their views therefore) have had such an opportunity to set foot on the island, with the RMS mainly only bringing families home. With the RMS leaving us, she is on our side - enough is enough; and its time for change. We hope that this major change will at least serve to question some of the existing attitudes on the Island, as much as it serves to save lives.
Feel free to share anything you would like with me- everything is kept confidential.....we know what its like to be a "Saint". And we will share our stories and articles with you.....thank you so much for your support. ❤️
