I unfortunately can speak from first hand experience that the report was in fact highly accurate having been through the criminal justice system on the Island myself....and experienced the fall out from it. The later WASS report was highly restricted after the UK Government decided that the "whistle blowers" had blown everything out of proportion. Now....why would anyone risk their livelihood...working as a social worker, by doing such. There were also accusations that social workers investigating were not "knowledgeable about Island life"....well no maybe they were not; but they are knowledgeable about what is acceptable on a British Island and what isnt. What is abuse and what isnt. This problem is continuing to date....as the social worker dealing with my case sadly lost her job last year, and is banned from the island forever more. Along with several others.
As for the justice system - having a jury of local residents does not work on St Helena. Everybody is connected to everyone else. The whole point of having a jury on a court case is that they have "no connection" to those involved. This is not possible on St Helena. And like the Judge, the jury should also be composed of expats.
